    TANEKAHA

    Is mostly found on infertile lowland sites. It grows up to 20m tall with a trunk diameter of up to 1m. The bark is smooth and grey brown in colour. Phyllocladus trichomanoides

    TOTARA

    A large forest tree reaching 30 meters. Leaves are 1.3-2.5 cm long and prickly to touch. The fruit of Totara is a seed seated on a swollen red base. The trunk can be up to 2m in diameter. Prodocarpus totara.

    RIMU

    Probably the most common and widespread conifer in NZ. Rimu can reach to 60m high with a trunk of up to 1.5m or more in diameter. The foliage is brown green and the twigs moderately weep. The genus is also found from New Caledonia to Southeast Asia. Dacrydium cupressinum

    KAHIKATEA

    Is widespread in lowland particularly swampy forests throughout the country. The tree reaches up to 50m tall, sometimes more, with a trunk diameter of 1.5m, often with rounded buttresses at the base. The bark is grey in mature trees. Dacrycarpus dacrydioides.

    MATAI

    Is found throughout the country except Stewart Island, on mainly alluvial soils and volcanic ash. Te tree grows up to 25m tall with a truck up to 2m in diameter. Prumnopitus taxfolia.

    MIRO

    Miro is mostly found in hill-slope forests at lower altitudes through the country including Stewart Island. It grows up to 25m tall with a trunk diameter of 1m. Prumnopitys ferruginea.
